Los Angeles County Selects Verinform for Major Graduate Medical Education System
September 14, 2004 - Portland, Oregon
The Los Angeles County Department of Health Services, the second largest county public health system in the United States, has selected Portland, Oregon-based Verinform Systems, Inc., to provide the University of Southern California (LAC+USC), Harbor-UCLA, Martin Luther King-Drew, and Olive View-UCLA hospitals with VerinformRM, a software solution for managing and tracking the training of resident physicians. Verinform's system will manage more than 1600 residents in 100 clinical training programs at these institutions, making it the largest single residency management system in the country.
Programs that train resident physicians in their chosen specialty, such as Internal Medicine and Surgery, must meet guidelines established by the Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). These guidelines encompass curriculum requirements, the evaluation of resident competency by faculty physicians, limits on the hours that residents may work each week, medical procedures performed by residents, and various other facets of resident training. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) also impose strict tracking requirements on teaching hospitals as the basis for funding resident training programs.
VerinformRM is a web-based system for capturing and managing enterprise-wide residency and Graduate Medical Education data such as schedules, procedures, evaluations, and resident duty hours. Complete and timely data collection is driven by automated e-mail reminders, and users can access the system from any computer with a browser and an Internet connection. VerinformRM also allows users to substantially customize the software to meet local needs.
"Our search for a county-wide solution led us to Verinform, a company instrumental in revolutionizing the management of residency information," said Lawrence Opas, MD, Director of Graduate Medical Education at LAC+USC Medical Center. "VerinformRM provides us with the ability to streamline documentation of resident competency, monitor duty hours compliance, and address program-level and institutional reporting requirements. Verinform has the only architecture capable of aggregating this information from all four County teaching hospitals allowing our teaching institutions to share best practice."
"VerinformRM was created by professionals with years of experience in creating and deploying software in teaching hospitals, said Verinform CEO and Founder Dina Dickerson. "We understand the needs of L.A. County's graduate medical education professionals for a comprehensive, integrated, and user-friendly solution for tracking and managing the wide range of resident-related activities, and our system meets those needs."
